Not only is Karina LeBlanc a living soccer legend, she’s also the latest guest on the For Kicks podcast. She’s one of the best goalkeepers the game has ever seen and the longest serving member in Canadian soccer history, and since her 2015 retirement she’s been busier than ever. LeBlanc is a Unicef ambassador and has devoted herself to giving back to the sport. We had a chance to catch up with her when she was recently a celebrity coach at a Footie camp in Edmonton. The proceeds from Footie camp fund the Free Footie soccer program, an initiative that supports kids who can’t afford to play the game. It’s a great cause and by sending your child to the paid camp, you’ll help give kids living in poverty the joy of playing soccer and building their confidence.
In the episode, we talk Rio Olympics by discussing the official 2016 Olympic roster and game schedule, and recap the recent international friendlies against China and France. Up next: Rio! It’s coming hard and fast, friends, and we’ll be podcasting on a more frequent schedule so we can cover it all. Our website will also keep you updated on how you can watch the tournament from Canada, the U.S. and the rest of the world. If you want to cheer along with other fans during the Olympics, be sure keep an eye on the Voyageurs Facebook page for viewing parties in Canadian cities.
We also touch on the upcoming NWSL break and share some of our thoughts about the WNYF Frontier Field disaster, though we encourage you to learn more about what happened by listening to: The Mixxed Zone: The Frontier Field Fiasco, The Mizzed Zone: Approaching the NWSL Olympic break…and the future, and reading: NWSL 2.0 by Stephanie Yang at Excelle Sports.
