For Kicks Podcast, Episode 66: Post NWSL Challenge Cup

Have we mentioned lately how great it’s been to have women’s soccer back in our lives for the last month? Because it’s been so, so great. The NWSL Challenge Cup was like a breath of fresh air, not only because it gave us woso again, but because it was so unpredictable and surprised us over and over again.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • recent CANWNT player news, including Jessie Fleming’s Chelsea signing
  • recent NWSL news
  • our official NWSL 2020 season kit ranking—something we’ve never done before but oh was it fun
  • the NWSL Challenge Cup as a whole, with specific focus on Canadians who played in the tournament

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 64: Supporter culture with Nicky Cottee

Supporter culture. It’s something that comes with a lot of question marks for a lot of Canadians, including long-standing fans like us. We continued our quarantine diaries by inviting Nicky Cottee, president of the Red River Rising supporter group, to come on the podcast and talk about what the heck we even mean when we say supporter culture.

A fellow NWSL and Canadian women’s national team fan, Nicky tells us about how she went from finding the courage to stand with the supporters at her first NWSL match to becoming president of Winnipeg’s pro club’s group. And, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to chat a little about women’s soccer, Canada and the NWSL.

There’s not a lot of news but we also talk about the impending return of Frauen-Bundesliga, the NWSL’s status and some updates from FIFA.

Stay safe, everyone!

This month, we talked to Adam and Nathan, hosts of Loyal Company of the River Valley podcast, about the Canadian Premier League, the impact of COVID-19 on the league’s second season and FC Edmonton’s 10th anniversary.

We also caught up with Adam and Nathan even further on an episode their podcast, so check that out and subscribe to Loyal Company of the River Valley wherever you get your podcasts and find them on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram @LoyalcompanyRV.

The next couple of weeks will decide whether the Canadian women’s side will spend the better part of 2020 in a run toward the Tokyo Olympics. For Kicks Podcast, Episode 59: CANWNT news roundup

There have been no tournaments, no matches and that means for the first time in a while, we dedicated an entire episode to news updates.

In this episode, we give updates and chat about:

  • the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament
  • Canada participating in a tournament in France in March
  • the U17 Excel camp in Mexico in late Nov./early Dec.
  • some recent player accolades
  • NWSL Silly Season—including league expansion, wage increases and more

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 58: Canada in Yongchuan 2019 tournament

Canada wrapped up 2019 with a four nations tournament in Yongchuan, China in November. In the two matches they played, they seemed to summarize the whole of 2019, in our eyes at least: low lows, and middling highs.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Canada vs. Brazil and New Zealand in the four nations tournament
  • the draw for the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament
  • the end of the 2019 NWSL season
  • a brief look ahead at the U17 and U20 World Cups and the NCAA College Cup draw

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 57: Canada falls to Japan 4-0

While Canada made it through the first half of 2019 ‘undefeated,’ it’s been proven over and over again that this has been a tough year for the team. Perhaps at no time was it so obvious that something is wrong on the senior national team than at their Oct. 6 international friendly against Japan.

We spend this entire episode talking about the game and the current state of the CANWNT.

We’ll be back in our next episode to talk about the NWSL championship and the 2019 NWSL season.
