For Kicks Podcast, Episode 13: Clare Rustad weighs in on Rio

If you watched CBC or TSN’s broadcasts of the CANWNT games during the Olympics, you’re already familiar with Clare Rustad’s “tough love” commentary on the team. What you may not already know, however, is that Clare is a former Olympian herself. From 2000 to 2008 Clare played the midfield in 45 appearances with the Canadian national team, including the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Oh. And she’s a doctor. Which makes her all the more amazing for taking time to talk to us on the podcast.

Up until now, we haven’t delved too deep into the semi-final match against Germany and bronze medal match against Brazil because we thought “Who better than Clare Rustad to weigh in on those games?” And that’s exactly what she does in this latest episode. Clare shares tons of insight on Rio and Canada’s bronze medal win, thoughts on the future of the team and even takes some listener questions. She’s one of our favourite people so if you want to hear more from her, be sure to check out her own podcast, The Footy Experiment, and look for more of her analysis of the beautiful game on CBC and TSN in the future.

At the end of the show, we chat about the possibility of future NWSL expansion and our beloved Houston Dash.

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 12: CANWNT and USWNT at the Rio Olympics, a chat with RJ Allen of Backline Soccer

Canada has reached the podium for the second Olympics in a row and will leave Rio with a hard-fought bronze medal! From the bottom of our little Canada-soccer-loving hearts, we could not possibly be more proud. In our next podcast we’ll be getting into the nitty gritty of Canada’s final days in the tournament, but until then…

In our latest episode, we talk to RJ Allen, editor-in-chief at Backline Soccer, co-host of the Scouting Report podcast and writer for Sounder At Heart. We discuss our thoughts about the US’s early exit from the Rio Olympic tournament, what we expect the impact on the NWSL and negotiations with USSF to be, and, of course, Canada’s bronze medal win.

We wrap things up with a quick look at the U-15 Championship in Florida, where Canada went home with silver.

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 11: CANWNT vs GERWNT and FRAWNT in the 2016 Rio Olympics

The Canadian women’s soccer team is charging ahead in the Rio 2016 Olympics, undefeated!

In our last podcast we talked about the first two group stage matches against Australia and Zimbabwe. In our newest episode, we recap the final group stage (and history-making!) match against Germany and quarter-final match against France. With wins in both games, Canada is moving on to the semi-finals. We talk about the emotional roller coaster that carried us here, plus do our best to look ahead to the next match against Germany (good grief, again) on Tuesday, August 16 and the bronze and gold medal games on Friday, August 19.

To wrap things up, we have some fun with a few listener questions.

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 10

After months of talking about it, the Rio 2016 Olympics are finally here! We’ve devoted most of our latest episode to discussing the first two group stage matches against Australia and Zimbabwe, which (spoiler alert) Canada WON! That’s right — after a final group stage match against Germany on August 9, Canada will advance to the quarter finals.

In other exciting news, our show schedule will be changing a little going forward; turns out, we can’t cover everything we want to cover with just one podcast a month, so from now on you’ll be hearing from us every two weeks.

And speaking of not being able to cover everything we want to in each episode: in our last podcast we ran out of time to mention that the NCAA Hermann Trophy watch list came out on July 20 and five Canadians were named to the list this year:

Two more CANWNT players are not currently on the watch list but they will be playing in the NCAA:

Most NCAA teams will start their season on August 13 and games are available online, so if the Rio coverage isn’t enough to quench your thirst for soccer, be sure to check them out.
