For Kicks, For Kicks Podcast

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 9

Not only is Karina LeBlanc a living soccer legend, she’s also the latest guest on the For Kicks podcast. She’s one of the best goalkeepers the game has ever seen and the longest serving member in Canadian soccer history, and since her 2015 retirement she’s been busier than ever. LeBlanc is a Unicef ambassador and has devoted herself to giving back to the sport. We had a chance to catch up with her when she was recently a celebrity coach at a Footie camp in Edmonton. The proceeds from Footie camp fund the Free Footie soccer program, an initiative that supports kids who can’t afford to play the game. It’s a great cause and by sending your child to the paid camp, you’ll help give kids living in poverty the joy of playing soccer and building their confidence.

Karina is also a champion of female leadership and all around amazing human. Listen to our interview with her and be sure to follow her on Twitter and enjoy the heck out of her Instagram.

In the episode, we talk Rio Olympics by discussing the official 2016 Olympic roster and game schedule, and recap the recent international friendlies against China and France. Up next: Rio! It’s coming hard and fast, friends, and we’ll be podcasting on a more frequent schedule so we can cover it all. Our website will also keep you updated on how you can watch the tournament from Canada, the U.S. and the rest of the world. If you want to cheer along with other fans during the Olympics, be sure keep an eye on the Voyageurs Facebook page for viewing parties in Canadian cities.

We also touch on the upcoming NWSL break and share some of our thoughts about the WNYF Frontier Field disaster, though we encourage you to learn more about what happened by listening to: The Mixxed Zone: The Frontier Field Fiasco, The Mizzed Zone: Approaching the NWSL Olympic break…and the future, and reading: NWSL 2.0 by Stephanie Yang at Excelle Sports.

The 18 going to Rio!

This morning Canada Soccer announced the 18-woman roster that will be representing Canada in the Rio Olympics!

Janine Beckie, Highlands Ranch, CO
Josée Bélanger, Coaticook, QC
Kadeisha Buchanan, Brampton, ON
Allysha Chapman, Courtice, ON
Sabrina D’Angelo, Welland, ON
Jessie Fleming, London, ON
Stephanie Labbé, Stony Plain, AB
Ashley Lawrence, Caledon, ON
Diana Matheson, Oakville, ON
Nichelle Prince, Ajax, ON
Rebecca Quinn, Toronto, ON
Deanne Rose, Alliston, ON
Sophie Schmidt, Abbotsford, BC
Desiree Scott, Winnipeg, MB
Christine Sinclair, Burnaby, BC
Melissa Tancredi, Ancaster, ON
Rhian Wilkinson, Baie-d’Urfé, QC
Shelina Zadorsky, London, ON

There were no surprises with this roster announcement as John Herdman had been saying since the Algarve Cup in March that he was fairly set on his players. As it would happen, injuries were the deciding factor for narrowing down the roster to the 18 that would be chosen to go to Rio as both Erin McLeod and Gabrielle Carle were cut from the 18 for Rio, and both are injured. Also currently injured, Sabrina D’Angelo did make the Rio roster but she is expected to heal and be ready before the tournament.

One of the more interesting questions with this announcement is who are Herdman’s alternates? With the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup his alternate list include Janine Beckie, Sabrina D’Angelo, Rebecca Quinn, Sura Yekka, and Brittany Baxter. Three of those five names are on this current roster. The alternate list for Rio is: Marie Eve Nault, Kaylyn Kyle, Kailen Sheridan, and Gabrielle Carle. Both Nault and Kyle were on the World Cup roster, and will only be called upon if any of the other players on the roster are injured before the tournament. Sheridan could be called upon if D’Angelo can’t heal in time, and she’ll remain with the team in training camp just in case that scenario occurs.

The Olympic tournament matches starts on Wednesday, August 3rd and runs until Saturday, August 20th. Put these dates in your calendar ASAP!

WED, AUG 3 – CANADA VS. AUSTRALIA – 2PM ET

SAT, AUG 6 – CANADA VS. ZIMBABWE – 2PM ET

TUE, AUG 9 – CANADA VS. GERMANY –  3PM ET

AUG 12-13 – QUARTER-FINALS

AUG 16-17 – SEMI-FINALS

AUG 19-20 – 3RD + FINAL
