For Kicks Podcast, Episode 64: Supporter culture with Nicky Cottee

Supporter culture. It’s something that comes with a lot of question marks for a lot of Canadians, including long-standing fans like us. We continued our quarantine diaries by inviting Nicky Cottee, president of the Red River Rising supporter group, to come on the podcast and talk about what the heck we even mean when we say supporter culture.

A fellow NWSL and Canadian women’s national team fan, Nicky tells us about how she went from finding the courage to stand with the supporters at her first NWSL match to becoming president of Winnipeg’s pro club’s group. And, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to chat a little about women’s soccer, Canada and the NWSL.

There’s not a lot of news but we also talk about the impending return of Frauen-Bundesliga, the NWSL’s status and some updates from FIFA.

Stay safe, everyone!

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 59: CANWNT news roundup

There have been no tournaments, no matches and that means for the first time in a while, we dedicated an entire episode to news updates.

In this episode, we give updates and chat about:

  • the CONCACAF Olympic qualifying tournament
  • Canada participating in a tournament in France in March
  • the U17 Excel camp in Mexico in late Nov./early Dec.

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 55: Catching up on WOSO news post WWC

This year has been all about the World Cup for us, and with that behind us we’ve turned our attention to everything else going on in the world of women’s soccer. But just because we’re tuned into other soccer doesn’t mean we’re not keeping a really close eye on what’s going on with Canada’s national team, too.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Canada Soccer news, measly though it may be, including:
    • our thoughts on recent comments by Coach Kenneth Heiner-Moller
    • the future of the U20 program with new head coach Rhian Wilkinson at the helm
  • NWSL news, particularly the new ESPN deal that will make NWSL games available to Canadians on TSN
  • Foothills WFC in the UWS Championship
  • Recent comments by CPL Commissioner David Clanachan on the prospect of a women’s side to the Canadian Premier League
