For Kicks Podcast, Episode 9

Not only is Karina LeBlanc a living soccer legend, she’s also the latest guest on the For Kicks podcast. She’s one of the best goalkeepers the game has ever seen and the longest serving member in Canadian soccer history, and since her 2015 retirement she’s been busier than ever. LeBlanc is a Unicef ambassador and has devoted herself to giving back to the sport. We had a chance to catch up with her when she was recently a celebrity coach at a Footie camp in Edmonton. The proceeds from Footie camp fund the Free Footie soccer program, an initiative that supports kids who can’t afford to play the game. It’s a great cause and by sending your child to the paid camp, you’ll help give kids living in poverty the joy of playing soccer and building their confidence.

Karina is also a champion of female leadership and all around amazing human. Listen to our interview with her and be sure to follow her on Twitter and enjoy the heck out of her Instagram.

In the episode, we talk Rio Olympics by discussing the official 2016 Olympic roster and game schedule, and recap the recent international friendlies against China and France. Up next: Rio! It’s coming hard and fast, friends, and we’ll be podcasting on a more frequent schedule so we can cover it all. Our website will also keep you updated on how you can watch the tournament from Canada, the U.S. and the rest of the world. If you want to cheer along with other fans during the Olympics, be sure keep an eye on the Voyageurs Facebook page for viewing parties in Canadian cities.

We also touch on the upcoming NWSL break and share some of our thoughts about the WNYF Frontier Field disaster, though we encourage you to learn more about what happened by listening to: The Mixxed Zone: The Frontier Field Fiasco, The Mizzed Zone: Approaching the NWSL Olympic break…and the future, and reading: NWSL 2.0 by Stephanie Yang at Excelle Sports.

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 8

You win some, you lose some. Canada just did both in two international friendlies against Brazil.

In this episode, we recap the June 4 and 7 games CANWNT played on home turf against upcoming Olympic host country, Brazil. Since both matches were in stark contrast to one another, we had a few thoughts to share. Okay, maybe a lot of thoughts. With these two tough international games now under our belt, we look ahead to the next string of friendlies against France and China in July and make our predictions for the Rio roster, which we expect to be announced in the coming weeks. We also answer some great questions from listeners.

As a bit of a treat and change of pace, in this episode we welcome special guest Andrea, former keeper for team Ontario and the U-17 Canadian team, to talk to us about the direction of the team, thoughts about the first Brazil friendly and her predictions for Rio.

On a much more serious note, we are shocked and utterly devastated by the shootings that took place at Pulse nightclub in Orlando on June 12. At times like this it’s hard not to feel helpless, but we can all do something to help by donating to support the victims, their families and their community. Please visit https://www.gofundme.com/29bubytq and https://www.gofundme.com/PulseVictimsFund to give and learn more about how you can help.

Spring is in the air, soccer fans, and you know what that means — the regular NWSL season has begun!

At the top of the podcast we discuss our thoughts about Canada’s international friendly (and exhibition match) against the Netherlands earlier in April. Then, we review the  recently announced group stage draws for the Rio Olympics and what we expect the impact on Canada to be. Speaking of impact, we couldn’t let this episode go by without talking about Erin McLeod, the devastating news of her injury, and we do our best to articulate a tribute to her. With the top spot for Canada’s number one goalkeeper now up for grabs, we also discuss Canada’s less notorious keepers and how we expect them to fare in Rio.

We may only be two weekends in to the NWSL season, but we still have lots to say about what we’ve seen so far. Plus, we answer some of your awesome questions from Tumblr. It’s another chock-full episode, friends, and we hope you check it out!

For Kicks Podcast, Episode 4

rio2016

Canada is going to the Rio 2016 Olympics!

It’s mission accomplished as Canada places second at the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying Championship and secures their spot on the Road to Rio. Are you relieved? Because we’re relieved.

Minutes after the tournament wraps up, we jump on the mic and share our thoughts about the results, including the predictions we made in our last podcast. (Who owes who a chocolate bar? You’ll have to listen to find out!). We discuss standout performances and our general thoughts about how Canada fared in each of the five games they played.

We also talk about Canada’s participation in the upcoming Algarve Cup, some of the other upcoming women’s soccer tournaments (including the CONCACAF U17 Championship tournament) and our hopes for some friendly matches on home turf before the Olympics. And, with the NWSL 2016 schedule just released, we look ahead to what the new season may hold.

This is quite possibly our most jam-packed episode to date.
